Creative Ardagh

Creative Ardagh, the duo of Annette Corkery and Ann Gerety Smyth, are based in Ardagh Heritage and Creativity Centre and are passionate about sharing the history and heritage of the area with all ages in as creative a way as possible. We do this through family events, school tours and adult heritage tours all year round. You can find more details on our main website here.

We were delighted to be able to help Adel Coleman with her research a few years ago by putting her in touch with some locals who had worked on the dig and landowner Michéal Keegan who was a source of lots of knowledge, old newspapers and who allowed her access to investigate the site. Come along at 2pm on Sunday 15th to hear about the history and importance of the Back of the Hill site and join us for the tour of the fort with Michéal afterwards.

Last year we celebrated the King at the Back of the Hill with a lecture by Adel in March and the launch of an anthology of writing and art in July. This year we want to take it further with this living history glimpse at what life would have been like in Ireland in the time of King Máine.

We are excited to welcome all of the participants who will take us back in time with their displays, demonstrations and artefacts. You can find out more about them and the other workshops on offer by clicking the tabs above.

Clay fort building
We will offer a free clay fort building workshop at 5pm on Saturday 14th which will explain some of the building techniques of the era and what day to day life was like in late Iron Age/Early Christian Ardagh. Places are limited and on a first come first served basis. You can register your interest by emailing creativeardagh@gmail.com.

Wet Felting Workshop
Creative Ardagh will also do a wet felting workshop on Sunday 15th at 12pm. Felting is an ancient craft, the original way to make textiles it predates weaving, evidence of which was found at the fort during the 1967 dig by Liam de Paor. This workshop offers a chance to create an image with unspun wool using the traditional methods. It must be booked and paid for in advance by clicking the button below. Places are limited.
